Fireplaces
Create a warm focal point that feels right at home.
Design inspiration · Not a completed ATI projectA fireplace focal point that belongs in your room.
A fireplace surround or mantel update can change the character of a living space without rethinking the whole room. Proportion, materials, and the relationship to nearby storage or seating help shape the design.
Decorative finish work must respect the requirements of the existing fireplace. Changing an appliance, fuel source, or venting arrangement is a separate technical consideration and should never be assumed to be part of a simple surround update.
What your project can include
The final scope depends on your home, goals, and the work agreed in your estimate.
Surround and finish concepts
Discuss the look of the surround and adjacent surfaces, along with material compatibility. Required clearances and the specific fireplace’s installation instructions constrain the design.
Mantels and room proportions
Consider mantel size, placement, and the relationship to the room’s other details. Combustible materials must be located according to applicable requirements.
Adjacent carpentry and finishing
Explore how trim, nearby built-ins, and wall finishes connect to the fireplace area. Keep service access and appliance requirements in view while planning the finished appearance.
Planning your project
Share photos and the fireplace make and model if known. Explain whether you want only a cosmetic update or are considering an appliance change. Existing condition, manufacturer clearances, venting, fuel connections, and permits may require specialist review. A decorative update does not establish that an appliance or chimney is safe to operate.

Can any wood mantel or finish be used around a fireplace?
No. Material suitability and placement depend on the fireplace, its manufacturer instructions, and applicable clearance requirements. The design must be checked against those conditions.
Is replacing a fireplace appliance the same as updating a surround?
No. Appliance replacement can involve venting, gas or electrical connections, permits, and qualified specialist work. It needs its own assessment rather than being treated as decorative carpentry.
